Menopause Test

Changes such as hot flashes, mood swings, sleep problems or vaginal dryness can raise questions. The Menopause Test by The Tester has been developed to offer a simple way to gain more insight at home into possible hormonal changes around menopause.

This self-test measures the level of follicle-stimulating hormone, also known as FSH, in urine. As oestrogen production declines, FSH levels may rise. An elevated FSH level can therefore be an indication that you may be in perimenopause or menopause.

The test is intended as a support tool for women who want greater clarity when experiencing symptoms often associated with this stage of life. These may include hot flashes, irregular periods, sleep problems, fatigue, mood changes, vaginal dryness, or changes in concentration and memory.

How the test works

The Menopause Test uses urine to detect elevated FSH levels. For the most reliable measurement, first morning urine is preferred. The urine should be collected in a clean and dry container.

Next, place 3 drops of urine into the sample well of the test cassette. The result can be read after 3 minutes and should not be interpreted after 10 minutes.

If you still have a menstrual cycle, the first test is ideally performed during the first week of the cycle, between day 2 and day 7, with day 1 being the first day of menstruation. If the result is negative while symptoms persist, a second test one week later may provide additional clarity. If you no longer menstruate regularly, the test can be performed at any time during the month and repeated after one week.

Result and interpretation

If two lines are visible and the T line is as dark as or darker than the C line, this indicates an elevated FSH level. If the T line is lighter than the C line, or not visible at all, no elevated FSH level has been detected at that time.

In women with an irregular cycle and menopausal symptoms, two positive tests increase the likelihood of perimenopause. A combination of one positive and one negative test may be consistent with an earlier stage of hormonal change. Two negative tests make perimenopause during that testing period less likely. If you have not had a menstrual period for 12 months and are experiencing menopausal symptoms, a positive result may indicate that menopause has most likely occurred.

Reliability

The test detects FSH in urine from 25 mIU/ml. In a clinical evaluation, the test showed an overall accuracy of 100.0% compared with another commercially available urine FSH test.

As with any screening test, it remains important to assess the result carefully. A test can provide direction, but it does not replace medical judgement.

Important to know before use

The Menopause Test is intended as a support tool and not as a definitive diagnosis. In case of doubt, ongoing symptoms or questions about the result, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

If you use hormonal medication, have recently used oral contraceptives, have been pregnant or are breastfeeding, this may affect the result. For that reason too, test results should always be considered in the context of your personal situation.

A positive result does not mean that contraception can be stopped immediately. Only stop using contraception once a doctor has confirmed that menopause has been reached.

In the box

The test kit contains the test cassettes, droppers and the instructions for use. To perform the test, you will also need a timer and a clean urine collection container.

Ordering with privacy

Orders are processed discreetly and shipped in anonymous packaging, so you can test at home with peace of mind.

Reliability

Looking at sensitivity and specificity, the reliability values of the menopause test are very high. In addition, the test is also CE certified.

The sensitivity of a medical test is the percentage of true positive results among sick persons.

Sensitivity = 99 %

The specificity of a test is the percentage of true negative test results among non-ill persons.

Specificity = 99%
